Knowledge portals are environments in which learning, knowledge sharing and working and support applications can be integrated.

In knowledge portals we distinguish:

- the front-office: the environment for the end users, trainers, coaches, assessors, line managers, HR managers

- the mid-office: the environment for content developers, moderators of forums, experts answering questions and others supporting end users, and knowledge management of  experiences (structuring and validating informal knowledge)

- the back-office: the ICT-integration and maintenance and support
